Siriraj Hospital and Museum
Siriraj Hospital, originaly called Wang Lang Hospital, is the first royal hospital in the country. King Rama V had it built to serve general members of the public when the ere of modern medicine made its way to Thailand. Siriraj medical museums were built to serve medical students and members of the public.
Wang Lang Lane & Phran Nok Road
The 2 km. road starts from Phran Nok Pier at the river and stretches to meet Charan Sanitwong Road at Sam Yaek Fai Chai crossroads. The road then cuts by Siriraj Hospital and is called Wang Lang. In honour of King Taksin, many public places in Thon Buri carry names ralated to his historic victory. The 300 metre lane, right at Phran Nok Pier, is packed with food hawkers.
Patravadi Theatre
The open-air playhouse located on the western side of the Chao Phraya River opposite the Grand Palace and adjacent to the royal temple of Wat Rakang,. Patravadi Theatre produces plays in Thai based on poems from the country's own rich literary heritage. Performances meld Thai classic and folk techniques together with interntation elelments to create an entirely new type of contemporary Thai theatre It also provides training classes of Thai performances for adults and children.
Supatra River House
This two-storey traditional Thai House on the banks of the Chao Phraya River near to the temple of the Dawn is a little piece of Thai history. It was formerly the home of Khunying Supatra Singholaga, who in addition to being a successfull business lady was a leading advocate of women's rights in Thai society. In her memory, and to open up this beautiful property and its river frontage to the public, the house has been converted into a first-class restaurant and dinner theatre. Here guests can relax in informal surroundings and enjoy the very best in Thai Cuisine, particularly the fresh seafood dishes. Here you are amongst friends, for this is still very much a family house run in the traditional Thai way. The decor is modern funishings for the comfort of all our guest. In the daytime there is the shade of the trees and the cool river breezes, while in the evening you can watch the sun setting and the lights coming on across the water in the Grand Palace.
Every Friday and Saturday is devoted to the dinner theatre. The Performanaces are created by Pataravadi, herself and actress and theatre owner, who invites Thai classical artistes to perform traditional folk plays and music in contemporary style and also in the style known as kub sepoc, a ballad-like recitation that has its origins in the Siamese royal court of old. The theatre takes place as an accompaniment to your meal, to enhance your experience and knowledge of Thailand.
Wat Rakhang Khositaram
Formerly called Wat Bang Wa Yai, the temple was built in the Autthaya period. It was restored and appointed a Royal temple by King Taksin of Thonburi who also sponsored the revision of the "tripitaka" scriptures at the temple. During the reign of King Rama I a melodious bell was found in the temple compound. The King ordered it to be moved to the Emerald Buddha Temple, and had five new bells sent back. |

Khao San Road
This road is an old road built during the reign of King Rama V (1868-1910). From the old map surveyed in 1921, some wooden shop-houses were already built on both sides of the road. At present, the road is well known among western tourists for guesthouses offering cheap accommodation. The area takes on the look of a small western community in the Rattanakosin area. |

Phra Sumane Fort
Phra Sumane Fort is a hexagonal-shaped concrete structure, topped with a pointed roof. At the beginning of the Rattanakosin period (1782) there were 14 forts along the city limits. Today, only 2 forts remain. Phra Sumane Fort was partly destroyed during King Rama V-VIII (1868-1934). The Fine Arts department repaired and restored it in 1959 and again in 1981.
Phra Arthit
The original feature of this lively commercial place was simply a small marketplace serving a community around Wat Chana Songkram. All types of traders ranging from street vendors, kawkers, stalls, and retailers to department stroes are selling all kinds of goods and foods here.
Thanon Phra Athit
Formerly a residential area for memb ers of royal families, the buildings were constructed in the archiectural style popular during the reign of King Rama V. Phra Sumane Fort is located at the curve of the road. |
